4 Types of Healthy Foods That Can Wreck Your Skin

We all want flawless, beautiful skin. You’ve probably heard that beauty comes from within which in this case means the foods you eat. It’s no surprise that eating a diet full of greasy, processed foods can lead to severe skin.

However, what if so-called healthy foods are causing your skin problems? These four types of foods, typically considered healthy, could be causing your skin to look its worst.

Healthy Foods That Can Harm Your Skin & Never Know About Them

Dairy

Yogurt, Cottage Cheese, and Low-Fat Milk

All seem like healthy foods but if you’re prone to acne, low-fat and skim milk are not your friends. A study recently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found a correlation between teenagers who consumed skim and low-fat milk and the presence of acne.

Interestingly, the study found no relationship between acne and drinking whole milk. Many people who’ve gone dairy-free enjoy the benefits of a clearer, brighter skin.

Researchers think the reason dairy causes bad skin is that the hormones milk contains.

The study recommends talking with your dermatologist about your dairy intake if you think it’s making your acne worse.

Dairy Food Can Damage Your Skin

Sugars And Foods High on The Glycemic Index

Several studies were done on all forms of sugar and their negative impact on the skin. These include foods high on the glycemic index, which measures how quickly foods increase your blood sugar. All types of sugar can lead to wrinkles as well as acne.

A study from Leiden University in the Netherlands found that “People who have high blood sugar levels over an extended period look older earlier.” Another study done in Turkey found that eating foods high on the glycemic index can lead to increased acne.

One of the main reasons all forms of sugar aren’t good for your skin is because sugar causes inflammation. That can lead to redness and swelling, which is the exact opposite of how you want your face to look.

High-glycemic culprits include not only white bread, sugar, candy, and other processed carbohydrates, but a surprising range of foods many people consider healthy. These include potatoes, raisins, rice, popcorn, bananas, watermelon, and cherries. Scaling back on these types of foods may be a good idea if you’re concerned about wrinkles or acne.

One Cup Of Coffee Is Good. More? Not Really…

Most people need a cup or two of coffee to get through the day. Research has shown several health benefits to drinking coffee, including less risk for diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver cancer, and heart disease. Coffee contains a high amount of antioxidants, which prevent damage to your body’s cells.

A little coffee usually isn’t a problem for your skin, but drinking too much could cause your skin to prematurely age or hormonal acne to flare up.

One of the main reasons coffee isn’t great for your skin is its caffeine content, which has been found to reduce collagen production. Collagen is a protein found in your skin.

It will help if you keep your skin firm and smooth. Reducing collagen production can lead to dull, lifeless skin and even premature wrinkles. Cutting back or eliminating coffee and other caffeinated drinks from your diet could help your skin look and feel better.

Spicy Food Can Damage Your Skin

Spicy Foods

 Have Cons Too

Spicy foods, like traditional Mexican, Indian, Thai or Chinese dishes, can often be healthy. Unfortunately, they can also irritate your skin, especially if you have rosacea.

A survey by the National Rosacea Society found that spicy foods were one of the most common food triggers for flare-ups. Even for people without rosacea, spicy foods can lead to inflammation. For your best skin, eat milder versions of your favorite dishes.

Some Foods Are Not As Healthy As They Seem

Sometimes foods people think of as healthy might not be; some are good for your body, but not necessarily your skin. Take care of your skin from the inside out, and you’ll get the glowing skin you desire.
