What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-rich plasma consists of two elements: plasma, or the liquid portion of blood, and platelets, a
type of blood cell that plays an important role in healing throughout the body. Platelets are well-known
for their clotting abilities, but they also contain growth factors that can trigger cell reproduction and
stimulate tissue regeneration or healing in the treated area. Platelet-rich plasma is simply blood that
contains more platelets than normal.

What is a PRP injection?

The treatment uses a patient’s own blood cells to accelerate healing in a specific area. Below is the process to obtain the PRP.

1. Blood is drawn from your arm.
2. Placed into the centrifuge that separates the platelets from the rest of your blood.
3. That solution is injected into the target area, such as an injured knee, a tendon, or the face. The idea is to
increase the concentration of specific bio proteins or hormones, called growth factors, in a specific area to
accelerate the healing process.

How to use PRP

What is PRP injection used for?

PRP injections are used for a range of conditions, from musculoskeletal pain and injuries or aesthetic
dermatology.

In dermatology, PRP is being tested as a treatment for hair loss. PRP may also speed up wound healing.
Dermatologists are using PRP to give patients younger-looking skin, and skin rejuvenation.

Skin Rejuvenation

The entire procedure takes about 45 minutes to one hour.

The PRP, injected into specific skin areas, acts as a matrix that promotes your own collagen to
grow, regenerates tissue, and thus acts to naturally smooth and tighten the skin. In this way, PRP
softens wrinkles and creates a smoother skin texture and tone.

While PRP may sound like something straight out of a science-fiction novel, some patients are finding
that PRP can:

  • Reduce wrinkles
  • Plump up sagging skin
  • Improved moisture retention
  • Get rid of deep creases
  • Increases collagen production
  • Enhanced skin tone and texture
  • Diminish acne scars

PRP injections can effectively treat male pattern baldness, both by preventing hair loss
and promoting new hair growth. PRP can also aid in the stimulation of hair growth after hair
transplants.
